EGRASS - Import/Export Design

For this mini project, I was tasked with improving the current export modal. It was currently in an implementation stage for developers to test out the site functions and needed a visual update.

Some of the primary issues were the spacing between elements being inconsistent and the entries being hard to differentiate from each other. To improve this design, I experimented with zebra striping to improve readability between lines. I also added additional information about what the modal included alongside some simple instructions to guide the user.

The visual updates were well received by developers. The changes also helped improve user’s understanding of what to do and their satisfaction when using the tool.

SOSAT - Side Panel Ideations

I supported other designers with background research, lo-fi design ideations, and general note taking/working sessions. Starting out on the project, I did some research into the general space(geology, faults, etc.) so that I could better understand and speak with SMEs. This led to better and more insightful interactions with our SMEs and the notes I took for the background research helped senior designers better understand the problem space as well.

From here, I was tasked with doing some of the lo-fi ideations for the tools side panel.

Whilst coming up with the initial designs, I made sure to write down any questions that popped up in my head, mainly regarding terminology and potential use cases. These would be used to help further the design when I met with the stakeholders and SMEs.

After the initial designs were done, I got feedback from the SMEs about some of the terminology and units used, which helped answer a couple of my questions about the naming schemes for the data entry. I also received feedback from my mentor about how the various fields were stacked.

With this feedback, I made some changes to the lofi designs and sent it to the other UX designers on the team to move it into higher fidelity.

This project helped me learn more about designing for complex, scientific backgrounds and the need to have a good footing in the terminology. My contribution was helpful to the team as it helped cut down on costs and time used, whilst also helping the user experience designers have a good ground on which to move forward with future designs.

CEERP - Website Building

I worked alongside a developer and another UX design intern to build a website using WordPress. The turnaround was 2 weeks from start to finish.

The stakeholders in charge needed a site completed in a short amount of time and on a limited budget so the UX Designer working on it reached out to us. My teammate and I were brought on to create this site due to us having some experience with web development and site creation in the past.

The process of building the site required me to learn to use WordPress, which was a tool I hadn’t used before. I was able to pick up on the development via looking at documentation, learning from tutorials, and experimenting using what I had learned in school.

My teammate and I were able to get the bulk of the site done ahead of schedule, which helped the sponsor a lot!

This project helped me learn how to better operate under quick deadlines. It also gave me the experience of translating a design into a working prototype/site and some of the trade-offs that occur when doing so.
